A guide for people arriving from the United States, Australia, Canada and other markets
People moving to Portugal often search for a medicine using the brand name they know from the United States, Australia, Canada, or another country.
Sometimes the medicine is available in Portugal under a different name. Sometimes the active ingredient is available, but the particular brand or dose is not. Other medicines are not commercialised in Portugal at all.
This guide covers several commonly searched international weight-management medicines and explains how their status differs in Portugal. It is not a substitute for clinical advice or a real-time pharmacy-stock check, and the offers may change after this article is published.
Why medicine names vary between countries
A commercial brand name is not the same as an active ingredient.
For example:
tirzepatide is the active ingredient in both Zepbound and Mounjaro
naltrexone/bupropion is the active ingredient in both Contrave and Mysimba
semaglutide is the active ingredient in both Ozempic and Wegovy
That does not make the products automatically interchangeable. Their approved uses, strengths, dosing instructions, packaging, and regulatory information may differ.
Quick comparison
Active ingredient | International name | Market commonly recognised | Portuguese position |
|---|---|---|---|
tirzepatide | Zepbound | United States | Not marketed under this name; tirzepatide is marketed as Mounjaro. |
semaglutide | Wegovy HD 7.2 mg | United States | Portugal has Wegovy up to 2.4 mg, but it is anticipated that new formulas will be released soon. |
phentermine + topiramate | Qsymia | United States | Not listed among medicines commercialised for obesity in Portugal. |
phentermine | Duromine | Australia | Not listed among medicines commercialised for obesity in Portugal. |
naltrexone + bupropion | Contrave | United States | Not marketed under this name; combination is marketed as Mysimba. |
setmelanotide | Imcivree | Specialist international markets | EU-authorised for specific rare obesity, but not currently commercialised in Portugal. |
Not all the products in this article are GLP-1 medicines. Qsymia, Duromine, Contrave, Mysimba and Imcivree work through different biological pathways.
Is Zepbound available in Portugal?
Zepbound is not marketed in Portugal under the Zepbound name.
The US Food and Drug Administration authorised Zepbound for chronic weight management. It contains tirzepatide, which is also the active ingredient in Mounjaro. [1]
In Portugal and the wider European Union, the tirzepatide brand is Mounjaro. Mounjaro is authorised for type 2 diabetes and weight management in eligible adults and is listed by INFARMED as commercialised in Portugal for obesity treatment. [2][3]
A person taking Zepbound abroad should tell a Portuguese doctor that the active ingredient is tirzepatide. They should not assume that a Zepbound prescription can simply be converted to Mounjaro without a medical review.
Can I get Zepbound in Portugal? Zepbound is not the Portuguese brand name for tirzepatide. Tirzepatide is commercialised in Portugal under the name Mounjaro. A Portuguese doctor must determine whether treatment is appropriate and what prescription can legally be issued.
Is Wegovy HD 7.2 mg available in Portugal?
In March 2026, the FDA approved a higher-dose 7.2 mg semaglutide injection called Wegovy HD for weight loss and long-term maintenance of weight loss for certain adult patients in the United States. [4]
The Portuguese INFARMED materials reviewed for this article list Wegovy FlexTouch presentations of 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg and 2.4 mg. They do not list the US 7.2 mg Wegovy HD presentation. [2]
European and Portuguese authorisation and launch decisions can change.
A patient should never combine pens or alter a prescribed dose in an attempt to recreate a product available in another country.
Is Qsymia available in Portugal?
Qsymia is a US weight-management medicine containing extended-release phentermine and topiramate. It was approved by the FDA for chronic weight management in adults and later received an additional US indication for certain adolescents. [5]
Qsymia is not listed by INFARMED among medicines currently commercialised in Portugal for obesity treatment. [2]
A proposed European product containing phentermine and topiramate was considered under the name Qsiva. Its central European marketing-authorisation application was refused following the EMA assessment. [6]
A person previously treated with Qsymia should not stop suddenly or attempt to obtain the ingredients separately without medical advice. Topiramate has other medical uses, and the combination has specific safety and pregnancy considerations that require professional review.
Can a Portuguese doctor prescribe Qsymia? Qsymia is not listed as a medicine commercialised for obesity in Portugal. A doctor can review the original diagnosis and treatment history and discuss legally available Portuguese options, but cannot guarantee access to the same foreign product.
Is Duromine available in Portugal?
Duromine is an Australian brand of phentermine. The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration maintains an active registration for Duromine 40 mg. [7]
Phentermine and Duromine are not included in INFARMED’s current list of medicines commercialised in Portugal for obesity treatment. [2]
People arriving from Australia should bring their treatment records, including the original indication, dose, duration, response, blood-pressure history and any adverse effects. A previous Australian prescription does not guarantee that the same product can be prescribed or dispensed in Portugal.
Is Contrave available in Portugal?
Contrave is a US brand containing naltrexone and bupropion. It is authorised in the United States as an adjunct to nutrition and physical activity for chronic weight management in eligible adults. [8]
Contrave is not the Portuguese brand name. A combination of naltrexone and bupropion is commercialised in Portugal under the name Mysimba. [2][9]
Mysimba is not a GLP-1 medicine. Its contraindications, interactions and monitoring requirements differ significantly from those associated with semaglutide or tirzepatide. In particular, naltrexone can affect treatment involving opioid medicines. [9]
Is Contrave sold in Portugal? The Contrave brand is not the usual Portuguese product name. The same active-drug combination, naltrexone and bupropion, is marketed as Mysimba in Portugal. A doctor must still assess whether it is appropriate.
Is Imcivree available in Portugal?
Imcivree contains setmelanotide. It is intended for particular rare forms of obesity associated with defined genetic conditions or acquired hypothalamic obesity; it is not a general-purpose weight-management medicine. [10]
INFARMED’s national analysis states that Imcivree is EU-authorised for a specific rare-obesity indication but is not currently commercialised in Portugal. [2]
People with a known or suspected rare genetic obesity condition need specialist assessment. This article does not establish eligibility for any rare-disease treatment.
Moving to Portugal while taking a weight-management medicine
A foreign prescription, familiar brand name, or previous treatment plan does not automatically determine what can be prescribed or dispensed in Portugal.
Bring the following information to a medical appointment:
The brand and active ingredient
Current strength and dose
The reason it was prescribed
The date treatment began
Recent clinical notes and laboratory results
A complete list of medicines and supplements
Details of previous side effects or treatment interruptions
A Portuguese doctor can review the information and decide what ongoing care is clinically and legally appropriate.
Ongoing care with TejoMed in Lisbon
TejoMed is a membership-based family-medicine clinic in Lisbon built around an ongoing relationship with one dedicated doctor. Its model includes smaller patient panels, longer appointments, proactive health planning and same-day or next-business-day sick appointments when available. [11]
For people living in Portugal, or preparing to move here, a TejoMed doctor can help organise care around the complete medical picture. This may include reviewing existing diagnoses, medication history, monitoring requirements, nutrition, sleep, cardiovascular risk and wider health goals.
All prescribing decisions remain subject to the doctor’s independent medical judgement. TejoMed membership does not include the cost of prescription medicines, laboratory testing, imaging, specialist care, or other separately billed services.
Important information: TejoMed does not guarantee that any particular medicine will be prescribed, reimbursed, or available from a pharmacy. Treatment decisions require an individual medical assessment. This educational draft is not medical advice, an offer to prescribe, or a guarantee of access to any medicine.
